Frequently Asked Questions
How do I order a cake?
There are many factors that go into the creation of a custom cake. The most efficient way to begin discussing your event is to e-mail us at michelle@eatgreatcakes.com. The first thing we need to know is the date of your event so that we can check if it is still available. Please provide the following information and we will contact you as soon as possible:
Date of Event
Event Theme/Occasion
(bridal shower, wedding, birthday, baby shower etc.)
Cake Flavor & Filling Choice
Ideas, Colors, and/or Description
Number of Guests
Your Budget
Telephone Number
Email Address
Delivery Time & Location
How far in advance should I order my cake?
Please contact us to discuss our availability. We can only accommodate a limited number of cakes each week, and we are often booked months in advance. A non-refundable deposit will reserve your date, allowing you time to later finalize the details of the cake. We suggest a minimum of three months to a year for wedding cake orders. For short notice orders, please call us immediately on the rare chance that we may be available. All cakes require a minimum 4 day notice in order to be baked and decorated.
Do you offer delivery?
Yes, we deliver! We actually prefer to deliver all wedding cakes and most large event cakes, as they may require some set-up. Delivery prices are calculated by travel distance. Long deliveries or out-of-state deliveries may require special arrangements, so please contact us for more information.
Can I pick up my wedding cake?
We don’t recommend this because cakes—especially multi-tiered wedding cakes—can be surprisingly heavy and difficult to assemble. If you do choose to pick up your wedding cake, we are not responsible once it leaves the premises.
Do you ship cakes?
We do from time to time ship simply decorated 6" cakes (no flowers or other sugar work). The cakes are packed in refrigerator boxes, shipped frozen overnight using Fedex. We cannot guarantee a perfect cake, due to handling during shipping. If this is something you wish to explore, please contact us.
What is fondant?
Fondant is comprised predominately of confectioners sugar, glucose and water. The best thing about fondant is that it provides a greater range for decoration. With fondant it is possible to attain a more refined and precise creation. Its decorative limits are bound only by the skill level of the cake artist. It can be painted with food coloring, dyed beautiful colors, cut into shapes, braided, or made to look like ruffles. Along with these more creative aspects, fondant can simply be rolled out and pressed over a cake to make the cake look perfectly smooth.
Are you supposed to eat the fondant or pull it off your cake?
There are no rules of etiquette when it comes to eating fondant on a cake. Many people choose to pull the fondant off because it is so sweet, while others enjoy the flavor and find it a nice addition to the cake. But don’t worry if you don’t enjoy fondant because under it you will also find a luscious layer of buttercream or ganache. For those of you who think you don’t like fondant, we encourage you to please try ours. We use a delicious vanilla fondant that we think may pleasantly surprise. We always provide a complimentary fondant sample at your wedding cake consultation, and we actually find that many of our clients are happily surprised by how much they like fondant when they taste it.
Do you have a retail store? Can I come visit?
We are available for cake design consultations and tastings by appointment only. We do not have a retail store or any pre-made cakes for sale.
How do I schedule a cake tasting?
We schedule cake design consultations based on our availability for your event date. If we are able to make a cake for you then we will schedule an appointment to discuss all of the details for your event. Michelle is only available for personal meetings for wedding cakes or large event cakes that serve 100 people or more. Due to the busy schedules of our clients and the time constraints and deadlines we face, we prepare up to 3 4” simple cakes for you to sample in your own home.
Because we bake everything fresh for your tasting, if you need to cancel, we ask that you do so at least 48 hours in advance of your scheduled cake tasting date.
We handle our tastings a bit differently as we bake out of a commercial kitchen that does not allow visitors.
The cost is $75, it is non-refundable, but it is applied to your order should you decide to book with us.
We settle on a date. Everything is baked fresh.
You decide which 3 flavor combinations you want.
We bake 3 4" cakes that are decorated with fondant or buttercream. Mini cakes of your final cake :-).
If you decide to book prior to the tasting I require a 50% deposit of the final cost of your wedding cake to secure your date. This deposit becomes non-refundable 30 days prior to your event and the tasting charges are waived.
How much do the cakes cost?
Since all of our cakes are unique, and customized to you, we do not have set prices. Cakes are priced according to several different variables such as the number of servings, the complexity of diverse design elements, and any particulars important to the client. Each cake is a custom creation and our starting price is $14.00 per serving. The base price of each cake includes the layered cake with flavored buttercream filling, buttercream icing, and very simple decoration. Additional sugar work such as sugarpaste flowers and fondant figurines are priced separately. Other factors that add to the price include cake sculpting, sugarpaste decorations, detailed piping, painting, airbrushing, or other time consuming design elements, and delivery.
All cakes must be paid off in full with cash, check or credit card at least one week before delivery date, or the order may be cancelled.
Do you require an initial payment for cake orders?
Yes. We require a non-refundable initial payment of 50% of the estimated cake order in order to hold your date. Our orders are taken on a first come, first serve basis. If an order is cancelled at the last minute we are unable to replace that business. For this reason your initial payment will not be returned if an order is cancelled. Wedding cakes must be paid in full two weeks before the date of delivery, unless otherwise arranged. For cancellations within 48 hours the full price of the cake will be charged and is non-refundable.
Do you make red velvet cake (or any other “velvet cake)?
We do not make red velvet or any other “velvet cakes” due to the addition of unnatural food coloring to obtain the color.
How do you handle food allergens?
At this time, we do not make any gluten-free, sugar-free, dairy-free, vegan cakes or kosher. Note that many items on our menu contain nuts and/or nut extracts, so please let us know if you have any nut or other allergies when you place your order. When baking, we avoid cross contamination in that we prepare and bake cakes with nuts separately. Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate anyone with severe allergies. We understand that allergies can be very serious and we use products (chocolate, flour, etc.) that may have been manufactured around nut products and all of our baked cakes are made using shared equipment that also processes nuts and gluten. We do not have a dedicated allergen-free kitchen. If you have severe allergies, we would recommend contacting a bakery with a dedicated gluten-free or nut-free kitchen for your cake order.
